The exhibition did not attempt to be a survey or provide an overview, but included examples of key artists and movements to illustrate the role that the juxtaposition of images and material have played in the development of artistic practice. Expanding ideas of traditional cut and paste techniques, the exhibition opened up the definition of collage to show a range of approaches including examples of sculptural assemblage, film montage and work created with digital technology.

Collage is one of the central creative activities within art of the twentieth century. Initially seen as a way to challenge the conventions of art itself, found elements were brought into play with paint in a formal collision of visually tactile materials which created new and exciting dialogues. Collage is inextricably linked to the age of mass media, where images are available to all and on a huge scale, where nothing is precious and can therefore be used again and again, cheaply and with alacrity.

Essay[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”621″ alignment=”center” img_link_to_large=”yes” img_link_lightbox=”yes” img_size=”large”][vc_single_image image=”622″ alignment=”center” img_link_to_large=”yes” img_link_lightbox=”yes” img_size=”large”][vc_single_image image=”623″ alignment=”center” img_link_to_large=”yes” img_link_lightbox=”yes” img_size=”large”][vc_single_image image=”624″ alignment=”center” img_link_to_large=”yes” img_link_lightbox=”yes” img_size=”large”][vc_single_image image=”620″ alignment=”center” img_link_to_large=”yes” img_link_lightbox=”yes” img_size=”large”][vc_separator][vc_column_text]Artists: Eileen Agar, Tariq Alvi, Donald Baechler, Eric Bainbridge, John Baldessari, George Barber, Hans Bellmer, Lynda Benglis, Kiera Bennett, Wallace Berman, Pierre Bismuth, Stan Brakhae, Ian Breakwell, Andre Breton, William Burroughs & Ian Sommerville, Claude Cahun, Mark Cannon, Melanie Carvalho, Andrew Child, Gordon Cheung, Bruce Connor, Dan Coombs, Layla Curtis, Guy Debord, Eugenio Dittborn, Thomas Draschan, Marcel Duchamp, The Duvet Brothers, Nusch Eluard, Max Ernst, Erro, Angus Fairhurst, Gelatin, Judith Goddard, John Goto, Brian Griffith, Thomas Grünfeld, Raymond Haines, Rachel Harrison, Nigel Henderson, Nicky Hirst, Hannah Höch, Christian Holstad, Georges Hugnet, Graham Hudson, Peter Hutchinson, James Ireland, Gwyther Irwin, Andre Breton with Jacqueline Lamba & Yves Tanguy, Gavin Jantjes, Chris Jones, Ray Johnson, Lawrence Jordan, Asger Jorn, Jeff Keen, Peter Kennard, Lewis Klahr, Jochen Klein, Jiri Kolar, Udomsak Krisanamis, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Jim Lambie, Peter Lanyon, Guy Limone, Linder, Graham Little, Andrew Mania, Christian Marclay, Louise Nevelson, Chris Ofili, Claes Oldenburg, Eduardo Paolozzi, Roland Penrose, Richard Prince, Robert Rauschenberg, Carlyle Reedy, Seppo Renvall, Mimmo Rotella, Carolee Schneemann, Kurt Schwitters, Katy Shephard, Ian Skoyles, Nancy Spero, Charles Spurrier, Frank Stella, John Stezaker, Tommy Stockel, Jessica Stockholder, Tomoko Takahashi, Jane Turley, Fred Tomaselli, Geerten Verheus, Rebecca Warren, Tom Wesselman, Jan Wilbraham, David Wojnarowicz[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Curators:
David Risley
Sacha Craddock
Stephen Hepworth
Graham Gussin[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Exhibition Dates: 27 March – 8 May 2004 Collage included over one hundred artists and examined the way collage has been used to explore different ideas from formal exercises in colour, material and form, to the creation of surreal spaces and the expression of political ideals.
